THE PROCESS OF REPORTING SEXUAL VIOLENCE
Process Of Reporting
In Lagos state, preventing and responding to GBV is a core component of specific agencies and organizations with protection mandates such as Women At Risk International Foundation (WARIF) and Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team (DSVRT). Given the multi-sectoral nature of the response it requires, the aforementioned organizations and partners address GBV prevention through the emergency response process and with programmes that includes the university communities. It is therefore important that student unions and organizations develop a working relationship with the relevant agencies within their geographic location.
The following steps should be taken in reporting GBV cases;
- Preserve clothing and other items that can be used as evidence
- Do not wash or bathe self or survivor before medical examination
- Report to the Campus designated team/person in charge of Prevention and Response to GBV.
- Proceed to the Police Station to make a formal report or call appropriate agency such as WARIF center.
- Proceed to the hospital or WARIF center for treatment and collection of evidences
- Seek trauma management from appropriate counselling centers such as WARIF center. Call the WARIF 24 hours’ confidential helpline for information, counselling and to report cases. If you are geographically too far, contact a SARC in your state.
