Gender Based Violence (GBV)

This is defined as violence targeted at individuals or groups because of their gender. It is generally believed that only women experience GBV because of the output of research conducted, however, men are also affected. For example, men also go through societal pressure and demands because of their gender.

GBV is divided into two categories;

  • Interpersonal violence: This refers to an act of economic, sexual, psychological or other violence perpetrated from one person to another because of their gender
  • Structural Violence: This refers to any form of structural inequality or institutional discrimination that maintains a person in a subordinate position, whether physical or ideological, to other people within her family, household or community. This is mostly instigated by culture
